TOLERANCE & UNDERSTANDING, A GREAT TOOL TO PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE

Some years back I was watching a preacher on satellite television, I cant really make out his name now,  He was like trying to preach Tolerance and peace amongst men and he cited example with the usual kitchen accident; like when your right hand accidentally cuts your left while chopping vegetables, and the question he asked was; will you put the knife in your left to cut back the right?

There is no need pondering over the answer  because it is obviously a No.  Funnily enough, it is the same right hand that will immediate thereafter take care of the injured left and then the chopping continues.  Why then cant we embrace this simple act of understanding and tolerance culture with one another as humans.

Looking back to the very first generations created, we all are of the same family.

TOLERANCE & UNDERSTANDING, A GREAT TOOL TO PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE.

TOLERANCE & UNDERSTANDING, A GREAT TOOL TO PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE.

What then is Peace?  Peace is an amorphous term in which no single detailed meaning can define what it is.  but simply put, for the purpose of discussion,  Peace is an occurrence of harmony characterized by the lack of violence, conflict behaviors and the freedom from fear of violence.  Although peace does not denote only the absence of violence, conflict or war but it is defined based on whatever the situation at hand and this is why it is an amorphous term in some circumstance when you talk about general peace for it includes peace of the mind, physical environment etc.

What then is Understanding?  Understanding means sympathetically aware of other people’s feelings; tolerant and forgiving, reassuring. an individual’s perception or judgement of a situation.  compassionate, sympathetic, sensitive, considerate, tender, kind, kindly, kind-hearted, thoughtful, tolerant, patient, forbearing, lenient, merciful, forgiving, humane, human, good-natured, approachable, supportive.  All these describes tolerance, understanding and peace itself.

It is only through understanding and tolerance we will be able to have peace with ourselves and others for it leads to forgiveness. Because when we tolerate and understand we will not be judgmental about people’s attitude for, we will verify and get facts before coming to conclusion about things generally even after conclusion there will be kind of accepting why a thing was so and you will be able to help the situation by improving it positively.    With this, there will be minimal conflict or destructive conflict anomgst men rather there will be more of constructive conflict towards opportunity to development.

FOLLOWING PRECEDENTS GOOD OR BAD?

Precedent is an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances. It is an act or instance that may be used as an example in dealing with subsequent similar instances.  In other words; A precedent is something that sets a standard for future events.

FOLLOWING PRECEDENTS GOOD OR BAD?

How often do we follow precedents?  In our day to day activities, in organizations and in society in general, often we do not like to follow precedents especially if the person who laid the standard is not in our good books, we tend to do it our own way thereby often getting it wrong.  Looking back to most innovations of today if precedents were not followed we would not have get to where we are today.  Because by the time you follow a laid down standard let us say building an object you will be able to study that earlier object and know the short fall which you are to improve on or leave out and as well, the good part that you can still maintain and make better.  This enables you to get better at whatever you do.

Take for instance in Nigeria an incumbent governor will never follow his predecessor’s precedents rather he wants to do things in his own way not wanting to have anything do with whatever the predecessor had laid down even to the extent of carrying out project due to negative relationship between them especially when they from opposite political party.  This is really dragging us behind because in the above instance by the time an incumbent brings on his own project and abolish the predecessor’s that project becomes abandoned, while the money has been wasted of which in future the incumbent would come to realise that it is important he carry out the abandoned project but by the time he realises this, it would be too late, then he needs to sign new contract fresh funds to carry out a long time ago project.

Let us forget about our negativity and look at what is good, and then imbibe it this is the only way we can move forward!
